A crazy-ass coat for my crazy-ass self

Wednesday, August 5, 2026

I was up until about 4:00 AM with my teenage daughter who currently wants to die, and today is my first day at a new job, after three years of unemployment and sporadic freelance work. Thank god it’s a remote position, because I’m sure I look like death. So, what better time to start a blog about crochet?

Over the last few years in particular, crochet has been my escape, my safe space. Sure, I lost my financial independence and my career was destroyed in an instant by AI, but I had yarn. Yarn and time. And yeah, my daughter is crippled by anxiety and I’m her main support and some days I’m just EXHAUSTED, but I can make colorful squares and circles. And I have. Over many months in 2025, I manically crocheted 313 five-round granny squares, each with a unique combination of colors. For what purpose? Because making colorful squares was something I COULD do.

I’ve now moved on to single-color circles, which I think I’ll turn into squares eventually, but my main motivation seems to be to just mash as many bright colors into one thing and make that thing as cheerful as possible.

But I had a vision a few days ago. A vision of me, as a crazy old lady, wearing the gaudiest coat made of granny squares and just being obnoxious and LOVING LIFE. So that’s my next project. I have the squares, I have the general pattern and layout, and I have the joining yarn, so here we go.
